Renewable Energy
Biogas cogeneration plants allow SIA “Baltic Pork” to efficiently convert manure into valuable resources—high-quality organic fertilizer, thermal energy, and electricity. The generated energy is used for the company’s economic needs, while the surplus electricity is fed into the general power grid.
Manure produced within the farm itself is a sustainable and efficient raw material for biogas production, ensuring high energy efficiency while reducing the impact on the environment. This approach makes it possible to develop environmentally friendly agriculture.
The transition to renewable energy solutions is essential both for the company’s long-term development and for society as a whole, helping to reduce emissions and use natural resources more efficiently.
One of the latest modernization projects at the “Rukši” pig farming complex in Laubere parish is the introduction of a slurry heat pump. This technology makes it possible to recover a significant amount of thermal energy from slurry even before its further processing and fermentation in biogas plants, thereby significantly increasing overall energy efficiency.
Our Experience
The first SIA “Baltic Pork” biogas plant was built at the “Krastmalas” pig farming complex in 2011. During the initial phase of biogas production development, the company gained significant practical experience and successfully overcame technical challenges, which allowed subsequent projects to be implemented even more efficiently and thoughtfully.
When starting the construction of the biogas plant at the “Rukši” complex, the company already relied on accumulated knowledge and technologically proven solutions tested in practice.
Investments in biogas production have fully justified themselves—both plants operate successfully at full capacity, ensuring the production of electricity and thermal energy for the company’s needs, including heating the barns.
The processing of manure in biogas plants is one of the most effective solutions for reducing odors during their storage and agricultural use, while simultaneously promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly management.
Main Benefits
Renewable Energy Source:
Biogas production is a CO2-neutral renewable energy source that allows for the environmentally safe processing of industrial pig farming by-products while simultaneously obtaining heat and electricity.
Odors Reduction:
Through the anaerobic fermentation process, odors caused by manure are reduced by up to 80%. Furthermore, the agricultural fertilizer obtained in the process that goes onto the fields is virtually odorless.
More Environmentally Friendly Management:
Biogas production makes it possible to turn agricultural waste into much more valuable resources. Manure processed through anaerobic fermentation emits many times less environmentally harmful ammonia compared to untreated manure.
Additional Income:
Although one must account for a longer payback period for invested funds, biogas plants make it possible to convert manure and other organic waste into thermal energy and electricity, which can be consumed for own needs as well as sold into the general grid, thereby generating additional income and reducing expenses.
Agricultural Fertilizer:
Not only energy is obtained during the biogas production process, but also a nutrient-rich substrate with increased fertilization efficiency.
Free Fertilizer:
As a result of the operation of biogas plants, a high-quality, homogeneous substrate is obtained through the anaerobic fermentation process. This organic agricultural fertilizer can be collected for free by anyone from our farms in both Allaži and Laubere.
